Heart Surgery: Types, Timeline, Recovery, and Alternatives

In most cases, heart diseases do not warrant surgery. Nonsurgical techniques, medications, and lifestyle changes may be used to treat them in some cases. Heart failure, plaque buildup in a coronary artery that partially or fully stops blood flow, failing heart valves, dilated or diseased main blood arteries (such as the aorta), and irregular heart rhythms are all conditions that require surgery.

Types of Heart Surgery

1. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is also referred to as heart bypass surgery or coronary artery bypass surgery. The surgeon uses a healthy artery or vein from another part of your body to carry blood past the blocked coronary artery in this procedure. By bypassing the blocked portion of the coronary artery, the grafted artery or vein establishes a new conduit for blood to circulate to the heart muscle. This treatment is usually performed on many coronary arteries.

2. Arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart beats too fast, too slow, or in an irregular rhythm. It can be treated with a pacemaker or an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Medicine is usually the first line of defense when it comes to treatment.

If medicine fails, a surgeon may implant a pacemaker beneath the skin of the chest or belly, with wires linking it to the heart chambers. When a sensor detects an aberrant heart rhythm, the device controls it with electrical pulses. When an ICD detects a dangerous arrhythmia, it delivers an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat.

3. A ventricular assist device (VAD) or a complete artificial heart (TAH) is implanted. A ventricular assist device is a mechanical pump that supports heart function and blood flow. A whole artificial heart replaces the two bottom chambers of the heart.

4. Repair or replacement of the heart valve: A Chandigarh heart surgeon can repair or replace the valve with an artificial or biological valve made from pig, cow, or human heart tissue. One repair technique is to insert a catheter into a major blood vessel, guide it to the heart, and then inflate and deflate a tiny balloon at the catheter's tip to expand a narrow valve.

5. Aneurysm repair: A patch or graft is utilized to replace a weak piece of the artery or heart wall to fix a balloon-like protrusion in the artery or heart muscle wall.

6. Maze surgery: A cardiac surgeon creates a network of scar tissue within the upper chambers of the heart to reroute electrical signals via a regulated channel to the lower heart chambers.

7. Heart transplant: In this procedure, the patient's diseased heart is removed and replaced with a healthy heart from a deceased donor.

Timeline

A patient undergoing heart surgery in Chandigarh will be required to stay in the hospital for 7–10 days. Following surgery, you may spend at least one day in the intensive care unit.

Recovery

The length of your recuperation varies on the type of surgery you underwent, but most types of heart surgery require a day or more in the hospital's intensive care unit. After that, you'll be moved to a different part of the hospital for a few days before being released.

The length of your stay at home will be influenced by the type of surgery you had, your overall health before the treatment, and whether you experienced any issues. A conventional coronary artery bypass, for example, could take six to twelve weeks or longer to fully recover.

Alternatives

Angioplasty: During this treatment, a surgeon inserts a stent into a narrowed artery to enlarge it.
During transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a new valve is implanted through a catheter. This opens up and extends the blood vessel after it is in place.
Balloon valvuloplasty of the aortic valve enlarges the valve by inserting a balloon.
